In Home Pot Lucks

In home potlucks have been a UUFA tradition for years.  These informal gatherings of members and friends are attended by nearly a hundred people each month during the school year.  Potlucks are open to all members and friends.  These events serve to strengthen the social and personal bonds that are a vital part of our fellowship.  The food is always delicious, the conversation always engaging.

Fellowship Meals

The highly successful Fellowship meals program began as a tradition of monthly, noontime, soup lunches on a few Sundays during the academic year. However, they have evolved to include several genres: a harvest brunch, Iowa-grown brunch, chili cook-off, and a traditional soup lunch. They are open to all ages of UU members, friends, guests, and other visitors and are organized by the Fellowship Meals Group.

The meals are held at the Fellowship following the second service on the fourth Sunday of the month–for sure, in October, January, February, and one other. Volunteers are recruited in advance to bring food to share, making it convenient for others to enjoy fine food and camaraderie, even if their choice is a last minute whim. Volunteers may also sign up to set up tables and chairs, serve food, and clean up.

The Meals Group also hosts a Easter potluck brunch at the Fellowship and a summer potluck  picnic at Emma McCarthy Lee Park. In addition, some Meals Group members host Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day potluck dinners that have typically involved 35 to 45 people at the Fellowship.

There is no charge for the meals, but free will donations are accepted and deposited in the Meals Group fund. People are also welcome to join the Meals Group, which eats and meets together two to three times a year, or simply be a friend of the group with a willingness to volunteer for a key role in ensuring the success of a meal or two.

Conscientious Crafters

UUFA Conscientious Crafters is an open group that meets on the second Sunday of the month (September - May) for fellowship while crafting. Each person brings whatever craft project she/he wants. The group started as a knitting group, but changed the name as crocheters, felters, needlepointers and others joined. The group has collected a stash of yarn over time, and this is available to anyone who can use it. For the past several years, we have had a fall retreat to talk about plans for the coming year. We have taken field trips to local yarn shops. We have participated in the auction by offering to make sweaters, scarves or hats for charitable donation in the name of the donor. We have made sweaters to be sent to India to children who could not go to school in the winter because the school had no heat. But mostly we enjoy each other's company while getting help with our projects, learning a new skill from an experienced member, or just working with yarn and chatting. We meet for about 2 hours immediately following the second service. A reminder email is sent to anyone who wants one during the week before the meeting.
